FBI Investigates Bomb Thrown Outside NYC Mayor's Home as Potential Terror Attack

The FBI and NYPD are investigating a bomb thrown outside New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani's home as a potential act of terrorism. The incident happened Saturday during dueling protests outside Gracie Mansion, while Mayor Mamdani and his wife were inside.

The FBI arrested two men at the scene, identified as Ibrahim Kayumi and Emir Balat, and both are now in federal custody. Two people familiar with the matter told NBC News that both men allegedly made pro-ISIS statements at the time of their arrest.

Police recovered two devices after the protests. One was confirmed to be a homemade bomb, described by officials as slightly smaller than a football, built from a jar wrapped in black tape and packed with nuts, bolts, and screws, with a hobby fuse attached. Officials say the device could have caused serious injury or death. A second suspicious container, found inside a car near the scene believed to be used by the suspects, is also concerning to investigators and is being sent for testing.

Investigators say the suspects were part of a counter-protest against anti-Islam demonstrators led by conservative influencer Jake Lang. One bystander described the scene, saying "there was a lot of yelling back and forth and then it just kind of erupted into a fight."

Mayor Mamdani issued a statement condemning the incident, saying, "Violence at a protest is never acceptable. The attempt to use an explosive device and hurt others is not only criminal, it is reprehensible and the antithesis of who we are."
