Gas Prices Rise in Riverside County as Global Tensions Push Oil Costs Higher

Drivers across the Coachella Valley are starting to feel the impact of rising gas prices as costs at the pump continue to climb.

Over the past month, the average price of gas has reached about $5.10 per gallon in Riverside County, while the statewide average is around $5.22, according to the latest available data. The increase has many drivers keeping a closer eye on gas station price boards before filling up.

While the increase may appear gradual, it can quickly add up for people who drive frequently. In just the past week and a half, gas prices have jumped 17 cents nationwide and about 58 cents in Riverside County, placing additional pressure on commuters and families planning travel in the coming weeks.

Experts say the increase is largely tied to rising crude oil prices amid tensions in the Middle East. According to recent market data, crude oil has climbed to more than $100 per barrel since the United States attacked Iran on February 28, sparking concerns about potential disruptions to global oil supplies.

Matt McClain, a petroleum analyst with GasBuddy, says international conflicts in key oil-producing regions often trigger quick reactions in global energy markets. However, global conflict is not the only reason for the increase.

McClain says refinery operations and seasonal fuel transitions can also influence prices, particularly in California where fuel standards are more restrictive than in many other states. Higher diesel prices, which are also seeing increases, can affect the cost of transporting goods and materials — sometimes contributing to broader price increases for consumers.

The timing of the price increases comes as many families prepare for spring break travel. According to AAA, more than half of spring break travelers are expected to drive to their destinations this year. Rising gas prices could make those trips more expensive, especially for long-distance travelers.

Meanwhile, some local residents say they are already adjusting their expectations as prices continue to climb.
