Middle East War Enters Second Week as Gas Prices Surge and a New Iranian Leader Emerges

The war between the United States, Israel, and Iran has entered its second week with no signs of slowing. A seventh American service member has now died from wounds suffered during an Iranian attack on Saudi Arabia, U.S. Central Command confirmed. Six of the fallen received a dignified transfer this weekend, and President Trump acknowledged more deaths may follow. "It's part of war," Trump said. "It's a sad part of war. It's the bad part of war."

Trump is not ruling out sending ground troops into Iran, saying only that there would have to be "very good reason." Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth rejected calls for a clear timeline, saying, "You don't tell anybody what your limits would be on an operation. We're willing to go as far as we need to in order to be successful."

Iran named a new Supreme Leader over the weekend: Mojtaba Khamenei, son of the Ayatollah killed in the initial U.S.-Israeli strikes. Trump had pushed to have a say in who would lead Iran next. The Iranian Foreign Minister rejected that outright, along with ceasefire calls that stop short of a permanent end to the war. "Unless we get to that," Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said, "I think we need to continue fighting for the sake of our people and our security."

The conflict is already hitting American wallets. Oil topped $100 a barrel for the first time in nearly four years, and the average price of a gallon of gas has jumped nearly 50 cents in a single week. Energy Secretary Chris Wright called it a short-term problem, saying "in the worst case, this is a weeks, this is not a months thing." Senator Mark Warner of Virginia pushed back, warning, "We're now seeing the ripple effects of this war with higher gas prices, with declining job numbers."
