Alcaraz Stays Perfect in 2026 as Andreeva Exits and Fritz Falls to Major Upset at Indian Wells

The BNP Paribas Open rolls into week two at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden with Carlos Alcaraz still undefeated on the year after a hard-fought three-set win over Arthur Rinderknech. The Spaniard, now riding a 14-match win streak to start 2026, will face 13th seed Casper Ruud for a spot in the quarterfinals.

The day's biggest story came earlier, when 21-year-old Alex Michelsen pulled off the upset of the tournament, knocking out former Indian Wells champion and world No. 7 Taylor Fritz in straight sets. Michelsen crucially saved seven of eight break points he faced, closing it out in a second-set tiebreak. It's his first top-ten win since defeating Lorenzo Musetti in Toronto last summer.

In the women's draw, defending champion Mirra Andreeva is heading home after falling to Katerina Siniaková in three dramatic sets. The match stretched two hours and 48 minutes, with Siniaková advancing to the round of 16 at Indian Wells for the first time in her career.

Iga Świątek also advanced comfortably, avenging her loss to Maria Sakkari in Doha last month with a straight-sets win. The two-time Indian Wells champion looked sharp and will face Karolína Muchová for a quarterfinal spot.
