Desert in a Minute: The Nude Bowl’s Wild History in Desert Hot Springs
NBC Palm Springs resident historian Steve Sumrall continues his “Desert in a Minute” series with the story of one of the Coachella Valley’s most unusual landmarks — the Nude Bowl.
The Nude Bowl got its name because the structure was originally part of a nudist resort called Desert Gardens Ranch. The kidney-shaped swimming pool once served guests at the resort, but after the property was abandoned, the empty pool took on a completely new life.
Beginning in the late 1970s, skateboarders discovered the abandoned pool and quickly realized it was perfect for skating. Word spread through the skateboarding world, and the remote site soon became a destination for enthusiasts traveling from around the globe.
Reaching the location was never easy. There were no paved roads leading to the Nude Bowl, but that didn’t stop visitors from making the trip.
By the 1990s, the area had become a gathering spot for frequent parties and skate sessions. Those gatherings occasionally turned violent, with reports of fighting and even guns being present. In response to complaints, authorities eventually filled the pool with dirt.
That didn’t stop the skateboarders. Soon after, they returned, removed the dirt, and repaired the bowl. Police came back again, this time breaking up the concrete and burying it once more. Once again, skaters dug it out and rebuilt the structure.
Today, the Nude Bowl remains a legendary part of skateboarding culture. Its influence even inspired a replica feature at the Palm Springs Skate Park.
