Federal Funding to Improve Safety at Coachella Valley Public Cemetery

Families visiting the Coachella Valley Public Cemetery will soon have safer access, thanks to a $1 million federal grant aimed at repairing the cemetery’s deteriorating roads. The investment, announced by officials including Raul Reyes, comes through the Community Project Funding Program and addresses safety concerns for visitors navigating cracked and worn roadways.

With over 13 miles of roads within the cemetery, many areas have become difficult to traverse, particularly for seniors and families with children. Repairing these roads will reduce the risk of falls caused by potholes or cracks and provide a more dignified environment for those coming to honor loved ones.

The total project is expected to cost about $1.2 million, with the federal grant covering roughly 70% of the expenses. Cemetery officials say this funding reduces the need to use their endowment, ensuring the community can complete the project without additional local financial burdens.

“This is an investment for the community,” said cemetery leaders. “It will make these roads brand new, very usable, and very safe, which our community deserves.”

The upgrades are expected to benefit the more than 261,000 residents who utilize the cemetery each year, although a completion date has not yet been announced. The project reflects a broader commitment to improving public spaces and supporting the Coachella Valley community.
