Teachers at Seaview Elementary in Salton City Face Layoffs as Coachella Valley Unified Cuts 80 Positions

More than a dozen teachers at Seaview Elementary School in Salton City have learned they will be laid off at the end of the current school year as the Coachella Valley Unified School District works to address a growing fiscal crisis.

The Coachella Valley Teachers Association, which represents local educators, shared news of the layoffs on its Facebook page along with a photo of the affected staff members.

The union says the layoffs are part of a broader plan by the district to eliminate about 80 positions across the district as officials attempt to close a budget shortfall.

In a statement, the teachers association emphasized the personal impact behind the job cuts.

“These are not just positions being cut. These are educators who have built relationships with students, supported families and dedicated their hearts to this community,” the statement read.

Union leaders also warned that layoffs can have ripple effects beyond the classroom, impacting staff morale and disrupting school communities.

They added that the biggest impact may be felt by students who rely on stable and supportive relationships with teachers.

The Coachella Valley Teachers Association is encouraging community members to attend the next Coachella Valley Unified School District board meeting scheduled for Thursday to voice their concerns.

NBC Palm Springs has reached out to the district for comment regarding the latest layoffs but has not yet received a response.
