Wellness Wednesday: Energize from Within by Supporting Your Mitochondria
This Wellness Wednesday, we're diving into one of the most important and most overlooked drivers of your daily energy: mitochondria.
So What Exactly Are Mitochondria?
Think of your body as a collection of systems, each made up of cells, and each of those cells containing tiny organs called organelles. Mitochondria are the organelles responsible for converting the food you eat, proteins, fats, and carbohydrates, into usable cell energy. The more demanding a tissue is, the more mitochondria it needs. Brain cells can contain millions, while a simple fat cell might have just one.
Why Your Energy Declines Over Time
As we age, mitochondria naturally begin to die off, and energy levels follow. A sedentary lifestyle speeds up that decline. When your body isn't being challenged, it stops producing as many mitochondria because it simply doesn't need them. The good news? Exercise, especially strength training, signals your body to build more. More muscle means more mitochondria, and more energy.
Excess omega-6 fatty acids in the diet are also a culprit, contributing to the oxidative stress that damages mitochondria over time.
How to Support Your Mitochondria
Beyond staying active, there are several nutritional approaches worth knowing about.
Antioxidants help neutralize the oxidative damage that breaks mitochondria down. A quality antioxidant supplement alongside a good multivitamin is a solid starting point.
CoQ10 is considered the top antioxidant specifically for mitochondrial health. Levels naturally drop as you age, making supplementation something many healthcare providers recommend, especially for older adults.
Omega-3 fatty acids play a direct role in keeping mitochondria functioning and alive. If fish oil has kept you away in the past, know that there are options available that are genuinely pleasant to take.
NAD-supporting supplements are another growing area of interest for mitochondrial rejuvenation, and some formulas now combine multiple mitochondria-supporting nutrients into a single product.
