10 Local Students Awarded $20,000 Scholarships Through BNP Paribas Open Program

It was a special celebration for student athletes in the Coachella Valley as the BNP Paribas Open awarded scholarships to local seniors working toward their college dreams.

Four senior varsity tennis players from La Quinta High School were recognized during a ceremony, each receiving a $20,000 scholarship for their achievements both on the court and in the classroom.

Tournament officials say the goal of the scholarship program is to help open doors for the next generation of students in the community.

For the recipients, the financial support will make a significant difference as they prepare for college.

“With the schools that I want to go to, like the UC's, tuition can be around $40,000 a year,” one student said. “This definitely helps so much.”

Another student added that the scholarship will ease financial pressure moving forward.

“I know some colleges cost a lot, so this is going to really change a lot. A lot of the student debt is going to go away and it takes a lot of weight off my shoulders. I’m super grateful for it.”

Parents and community members attended the ceremony to celebrate the students’ accomplishments, many becoming emotional as they watched their children receive the recognition.

“This is my baby, my only child,” one parent said. “I’m just really proud of everything he’s accomplished.”

This year marks a major expansion of the scholarship program. Instead of awarding four scholarships, tournament organizers more than doubled the number of recipients to ten students across the valley.

In addition to the four students from La Quinta High School, scholarships will also go to two students each from Shadow Hills High School, Desert Mirage High School, and Coachella Valley High School.

Officials say education remains one of the most important investments they can make in the community.

“What you study and what you learn might not end up being exactly what you do,” a representative said. “But it will open doors for you. That’s where tennis connects with education. Tennis is a sport we love, but it’s also a sport that can open doors.”

The celebration will continue later this week when all ten scholarship recipients are formally recognized during a presentation at Indian Wells Tennis Garden, the home of the BNP Paribas Open.

The students will be honored Saturday inside Stadium One in front of fans attending the tournament, marking a major milestone in their academic journeys.
