New Federal Safety Rules Target Dangerous Water Beads
New federal safety regulations are now in effect for a popular toy found in many homes and classrooms.
Water beads are small, colorful balls often used for sensory play, decorations, and crafts. When placed in water, the tiny beads can expand up to 100 times their original size.
While they may look harmless, experts warn they can be extremely dangerous if swallowed. Once ingested, the beads can continue expanding inside a child’s body, potentially causing serious internal blockages that require emergency medical treatment. Thousands of children have been sent to the hospital because of water bead incidents.
The new federal safety standard requires manufacturers to meet stricter guidelines designed to reduce the risk to children. These rules include stronger warning labels, tougher testing requirements, and steps to prevent the beads from being marketed to very young children.
Health and safety officials say the changes are aimed at helping parents better understand the risks and preventing dangerous accidents at home and in school settings.
