Behind the Scenes at the BNP Paribas Open: The Ball Crew Keeping Matches Moving

The BNP Paribas Open is known as one of the biggest stops in professional tennis. But between the aces and match points, another team works just as hard to keep the tournament running smoothly.

Courtside, a dedicated group helps ensure every match flows from the first serve to the final point. In the fast-paced world of professional tennis, every second counts. At the BNP Paribas Open, a highly trained ball crew makes sure the action never slows down.

The team includes more than 320 members ranging in age from 13 to 35. Throughout each match, they retrieve balls, provide towels to players, and even hold umbrellas during breaks in play — all while staying nearly invisible to the audience.

For first-time ball kid Ashton Cahoon, the role required plenty of preparation. A tennis player himself, Cahoon said the job takes practice, focus, and quick reflexes to master.

But the hard work pays off. Ball kids operate just feet away from some of the biggest stars in the sport, offering a unique perspective on the game. For others on the crew, the experience is so rewarding that they return year after year.

Emily Ding is one of those returning members. She says being part of the team allows her to stay close to the sport while contributing to the tournament’s success.

Leading this year’s crew is Herman Chin, chairman of the ball crew program. Chin says the goal is simple: support the players and keep matches running as smoothly as possible. Much like the tournament itself, earning a spot on the crew is competitive. Applicants go through training and selection before they are chosen to take the court.

While the world’s top players deliver the powerful serves and dramatic winners that excite fans, the ball crew ensures every match stays in play. And for the young athletes and volunteers who make up the team, the experience is one they won’t soon forget.
