Desert Best Friends Closet Helps Job Seekers Build Skills And Confidence
At Ben & Jerry's in downtown Palm Springs, they're serving up more than ice cream. They're creating career opportunities.
The shop is partnering with Desert Best Friends Closet, a local nonprofit that connects job seekers with hands-on work experience and proper attire for the workplace, giving people a real feel for a work environment before committing to a career path.
One of those people is Elderson, who is legally blind. He says the job suits him well. "It's a very calm job, which I like," he said, adding that he hopes his story sends a message: "Disability doesn't really get in the way. I can show people that I can work."
Owner Alison says the partnership was an easy decision. "The least we could do is give back to them in any way that we can," she said, "especially people who maybe don't have that chance to go out on their own."
For anyone in a similar situation, Elderson has simple advice: reach out. "They're just people that want to help," he said. "If you need anything, just reach out."
