Extra Sheriff, Police Patrols Planned Today for St. Patrick's Day

RIVERSIDE (CNS) - Motorists inclined to imbibe alcoholic beverages
today in celebration of St. Patrick's Day throughout Riverside County should
not chance their luck drinking and driving, according to law enforcement
officials.

The sheriff's department and municipal police agencies countywide will
be stepping up patrols as part of an effort to catch drivers who take their
St. Paddy's celebrations too far and hit the roads while impaired.
  

``We want people to make St. Patrick's Day memorable for all the right
reasons,'' sheriff's Sgt. Evan Bechtold said. ``Before you raise a glass,
make sure to plan a safe ride home, whether that's a designated sober driver,
ride share, taxi or public transportation.''
  

Targeted operations are currently planned in Jurupa Valley, Lake
Elsinore, Menifee, Moreno Valley, Palm Desert, Perris, San Jacinto and Thermal.
  

The California Office of Traffic Safety is providing additional
funding to support extra and overtime patrols on St. Patrick's Day.
  

``Impaired driving is not just from alcohol,'' according to a Menifee
Police Department statement. ``Prescription drugs, over-the-counter
medications, cannabis products and other drugs may also cause impairment. If
you plan on drinking or taking medications with a driving warning label, let
someone who is sober drive.''

Authorities recommended that anyone who intends to celebrate with
alcohol or drugs designate a sober driver well in advance, or reserve space via
a ride-sharing service, to get home.
  

Penalties for first-time DUI offenders -- when injuries aren't
involved -- can include around $13,000 in fines, loss of driving privileges and
probation.
  

The California Highway Patrol is also expected to step up traffic
enforcement on inland freeways, highways and unincorporated roads.
