Palm Springs Fire Deputy Chief Honored for Saving IVF Embryos After Bombing
A local hero is being recognized for extraordinary bravery following a dangerous rescue effort during last year’s Palm Springs bombing.
The American Red Cross Southern California Region honored 10 individuals as part of its Inland Empire Heroes Awards, highlighting acts of courage and service across the region. Among them was Palm Springs Fire Department Deputy Chief Gregory Lyle, who received the First Responder Hero Award for his life-saving actions at an IVF clinic damaged in the explosion.
On the day of the bombing, Deputy Chief Lyle was off duty. Despite that, he responded immediately when he heard the call for help. Upon arriving at the scene, Lyle joined members of the FBI and entered the unstable building to restore power—an essential step in preserving embryos stored inside the clinic.
His quick thinking and willingness to risk his own safety helped ensure the embryos, representing future families, were not lost.
Even after receiving the recognition, Lyle remained humble about his actions. He says he was simply doing his job and does not consider himself a hero.
However, others strongly disagree.
American Red Cross officials say Lyle’s actions went above and beyond the call of duty, making him an obvious choice for the honor. The owner of the IVF clinic, Dr. Mehar Abdallah, also praised Lyle’s bravery in a statement, crediting him with saving the embryos under extremely dangerous conditions.
For Lyle, the moment has taken on even greater meaning in the months since the incident, as he reflects on the lives and families his actions may have helped protect.
In addition to Deputy Chief Lyle, Palm Springs Police Captain Gustavo Reza was also recognized, receiving the Gift of Life Hero Award for his contributions to the community.
The ceremony serves as a reminder of the everyday heroes working across the Coachella Valley—often without recognition—who step up in moments of crisis to protect and serve.
