Train Derailment Cleanup Continues Near Salton Sea; Stretch Of Highway 111 Remains Closed

Cleanup from Wednesday's train derailment near the Salton Sea is still underway, Cal Fire confirmed Thursday morning, with Union Pacific Railroad crews expected to remain on scene throughout the day, with Cal Fire on standby.
The derailment happened on Wednesday around 5 p.m. off Highway 111 near Parkside Drive, sending approximately 20 cars carrying 40 shipping containers off the tracks. Due to the cleanup, Highway 111 between Bay Drive and Parkside Drive remains closed as of Thursday morning, and drivers should expect the closure to stay in place for much of the day.
No injuries or evacuations have been reported, with officials saying the public is safe in the area. The cause of the derailment remains under investigation.
