Inmate Dies After Medical Emergency at Banning Jail

An investigation is underway after an inmate died following a medical emergency at the Larry D. Smith Correctional Facility in Banning.

Authorities say 62-year-old George Ortiz of Corona, was found in distress inside his cell.

Custody staff and jail medical personnel immediately began lifesaving measures until paramedics arrived. However, Ortiz was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officials say there are no signs of foul play at this time.

The investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death remains ongoing.
