Palm Springs Nonprofit Helps Job Seekers Gain Skills and Confidence Through Local Partnerships
Finding a job can be a challenge, but one Palm Springs nonprofit is working to make that process easier for people across the community.
Desert Best Friends Closet is helping job seekers build confidence and develop the skills they need to succeed, thanks in part to partnerships with local businesses like Ben and Jerry’s in downtown Palm Springs. The collaboration offers hands-on job training, real-world experience, and access to proper work attire.
For individuals like Elderson, who is legally blind, the opportunity is about more than just employment. It’s a chance to prove that disabilities do not define a person’s ability to contribute in the workplace.
At the popular ice cream shop, the environment is not only welcoming but also supportive, allowing participants to ease into a work setting while gaining valuable experience. The nonprofit also conducts situational assessments to help individuals determine what type of work environment best suits them.
Shop owner Allison says the partnership is about giving back and creating opportunities for those who may not otherwise get a chance.
For Elderson, the experience is empowering. He hopes his journey encourages others to seek help, take that first step, and pursue meaningful work—whether it’s scooping ice cream or building a long-term career.
