Palm Springs Police Launch “Operation Desert Zero” to Crack Down on Reckless Driving

The Palm Springs Police Department is taking a firm stance on traffic safety with the launch of a new initiative called “Operation Desert Zero,” aimed at reducing dangerous driving behaviors across the city.

The program, which emphasizes zero tolerance for reckless driving, is focusing heavily on high-traffic areas such as Highway 111—one of the city’s busiest and most accident-prone corridors. Officials say the goal is simple: prevent crashes and protect those who use the road, especially pedestrians and cyclists.

Palm Springs Police have partnered with the California Highway Patrol to increase patrol presence and enforcement efforts in areas known for frequent violations. According to Sergeant Mike Lamb of the department’s traffic division, the initiative was sparked in part by a recent vehicle-versus-pedestrian incident earlier this year.

Just two weeks into the program, officers are already seeing results. During a recent red-light enforcement operation, authorities used drones to monitor intersections, catching multiple drivers running red lights and issuing several citations.

In addition to enforcement, Operation Desert Zero includes a strong educational component. Officers are urging drivers to make safer choices behind the wheel—such as avoiding phone use while driving and obeying traffic signals.

Community groups are also getting involved. Mark DeAngelis, president of the Palm Springs Front Runners and Walkers, expressed support for the effort, noting that the organization’s hundreds of members regularly walk, run, and bike throughout the city.

Police say safety is a shared responsibility. Pedestrians are encouraged to use crosswalks, while cyclists are reminded to stay in designated bike lanes.

With increased enforcement and community cooperation, officials hope Operation Desert Zero will lead to safer streets throughout Palm Springs.
