Spring Travel and Gatherings Raise Importance of Staying Up to Date on Vaccines, Pharmacist Says
As spring brings warmer weather, increased travel, and more social gatherings, health experts say it’s a critical time to make sure your vaccinations are up to date.
Dr. Paul Gora says even though peak respiratory illness season is winding down, protection remains important. He recommends anyone who hasn’t yet received their annual flu shot or COVID vaccine to consider getting caught up now.
For older adults, there are additional recommendations. Those 75 and older — or individuals between 50 and 74 with chronic health conditions — are encouraged to get the RSV vaccine. Meanwhile, adults 65 and older who received a COVID vaccine in the fall may now be due for a second dose.
Pharmacists play a key role in helping patients determine what vaccines they may need. By reviewing vaccination history, age, and underlying health conditions, they can create a personalized plan to ensure proper protection.
Beyond flu, COVID, and RSV, pharmacies also offer a wide range of other immunizations, including pneumonia, shingles, tetanus, and hepatitis vaccines. Travel can also introduce new risks, making it important to consult with a pharmacist before heading abroad.
Dr. Gora says discussing travel plans can help identify vaccines recommended for specific destinations, especially when visiting areas with different health risks or environments.
The good news — pharmacists are among the most accessible healthcare professionals. Most pharmacies offer walk-in consultations, making it easy to ask questions and get vaccinated without an appointment.
Staying protected this season starts with a simple step — checking in with your local pharmacist.
