BREAKING: Coachella Mayor Steven Hernandez Pleads Guilty to Felony

A major development in the Steven Hernandez trial as the Coachella mayor has plead guilty to one felony in the Larson Justice Center courtroom Tuesday morning in Indio.

Hernandez plead guilty to count four from the original indictment, which stated he willfully and unlawfully made a contract in his official capacity, in which he had a financial interest.

That contract was made with the Coachella Valley Association of Governments in connection to their Housing First program.

We spoke to the DA's Office who confirmed that Hernandez cannot hold public office in California for the remainder of his life.

As part of the plea agreement, the prosecution has agreed to dismiss the rest of the eight criminal counts, which included misdemeanor conflict of interest charges and perjury charges.

Under the plea bargain, Hernandez will be put on two years of probation with no jail time. Additionally, he must complete 200 hours of community service and can never own a firearm or ammunition for the remainder of his life.

We asked Mayor Hernandez and his attorney for comment, but they have declined.

We'll have more on this report at 5 and 6 p.m.
