Coachella Valley Boxer Reflects After Opponent Hospitalized Following Knockout

For one Coachella Valley boxer, a moment of triumph quickly turned into concern inside the ring.

Jocelyn Camarillo secured her first knockout victory just 78 seconds into her latest fight against Isis Sio. But what began as a milestone moment soon took a serious turn.

Camarillo says she saw an opening during the fight—landing a body shot followed by a hook to the head that ended the match. While she initially celebrated the win, her focus immediately shifted when she realized her opponent was not getting back up.

Sio was rendered unconscious in the ring, later taken out on a stretcher, and placed in a medically induced coma for several days.

In a statement, Sio’s family says she has since been taken off a ventilator and remains in the ICU, but is showing signs of progress. They also noted she had been medically cleared prior to the fight and understood the risks involved in boxing.

Camarillo says the incident has left a lasting impact, emphasizing that while fighters train for knockouts, no one wants to see their opponent seriously hurt.

The situation highlights the inherent dangers of the sport, serving as a sobering reminder that even in victory, boxing can carry significant consequences.

Camarillo says she plans to return to the ring in May, carrying this experience with her moving forward.
