Houston Airport Hit with Massive TSA Delays as Shutdown Impacts Security Staffing
Travelers at Houston’s Bush Intercontinental Airport are dealing with some of the longest TSA wait times in the country, as a government shutdown continues to strain airport staffing.
At times, passengers have waited more than four hours to clear security, with some missing flights entirely. Officials say the situation is being driven by a sharp drop in available TSA workers.
The ongoing shutdown has left many TSA agents working without pay, leading to high callout rates and resignations. In some cases, up to 40 percent of staff have called out at major airports, forcing security lanes to close and slowing down processing.
Airport officials say the problem is especially severe in Houston, where fewer than half of the available screening lanes are open while passenger traffic remains high.
In contrast, nearby airports with additional staffing support have seen significantly shorter wait times, highlighting how staffing levels directly impact travel delays.
Officials warn the situation could worsen if the shutdown continues, particularly as travel demand increases heading into busy periods.
Passengers are being urged to arrive early, monitor wait times, and consider alternative travel plans when possible.
