Inside Brooklyn’s Notorious Jail Where Venezuela’s Maduro Is Being Held
New details are emerging about life inside a notorious Brooklyn jail where Venezuela’s former leader Nicolás Maduro has been held for more than 80 days.
Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, are being held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn after being transferred to the United States earlier this year. Both have pleaded not guilty to charges including drug trafficking, money laundering, and corruption.
While Maduro’s family says he remains in good spirits, reports from legal experts and former officials paint a much harsher picture of life inside the facility.
The jail has long faced criticism for its conditions, including reports of extreme isolation, limited access to medical care, and unsanitary food. Experts say high-profile detainees like Maduro are often held in highly restrictive housing, spending up to 23 hours a day in their cells.
Inmates typically have limited communication with others, restricted visitation, and tightly controlled movement throughout the facility. Even communication between co-defendants — including spouses — is generally prohibited.
The facility has also been under scrutiny for issues ranging from overcrowding to safety concerns and inadequate healthcare.
Maduro’s next court hearing is scheduled for March 26, where more details about the case and his condition could emerge.
