Senate Blocks Democratic Effort to Limit Trump's War Powers on Iran

The Senate rejected the latest Democratic attempt to rein in President Trump's authority over the war with Iran, voting 47 to 53 along party lines to block a war powers resolution from reaching the floor.

The vote followed about an hour of debate, with lawmakers on both sides arguing over whether Congress should have a greater say in how the war is conducted. Senator John Fetterman of Pennsylvania was the only Democrat to vote against the measure, while Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky broke from his party to support it.

This marks the third war powers resolution Democrats have introduced in an effort to require congressional approval before the president takes further action against Iran. All three have failed to advance.

Democrats say they aren't done. They've vowed to keep bringing war powers resolutions to the floor until Republicans agree to hold public hearings on Iran.
