Why Relationships Struggle: Expert Says Emotional Safety Matters More Than Love

A relationship expert says the biggest reason couples struggle today isn’t a lack of love—but a lack of emotional safety.

Meg Tuohey, host of the Wisdom Stripes podcast, says modern life is putting unprecedented pressure on relationships. From financial stress to social media and busy schedules, many couples are operating in a constant state of overwhelm.

“When we’re pushed into survival mode, we lose connection to ourselves and the people we love,” Tuohey explained. She says that’s when small issues begin to build, and without the time or energy to repair them, deeper relationship problems can take hold.

Tuohey emphasizes that emotional resilience is a skill that can be learned, and that honest, direct communication is key to rebuilding connection.

She also challenges a common belief about relationships—that both partners must be equally ready for change.

According to Tuohey, one person can shift the dynamic. “If one partner changes their approach, the other has a choice—to follow or not,” she said, comparing it to changing steps in a dance.

Her message is one of empowerment, encouraging individuals to take the lead in creating healthier patterns, even if their partner isn’t immediately on board.

For more insights, Tuohey’s book “Heartprint” is available online, and she shares additional resources through her social media platforms.
