Bonnets, Bids, and Best Friends: Palm Springs Restaurant Hosts Fundraiser for Guide Dogs

A room full of elaborate Easter bonnets and spirited bidders turned a Palm Springs restaurant into a fundraising event for two local animal organizations. Animal Samaritans and Guide Dogs of the Desert recently partnered for an Easter Bonnet Auction at Eight4Nine Restaurant, raising money to support the care of guide dogs in the Coachella Valley.

Guests bid on one-of-a-kind handcrafted bonnets while enjoying food and drinks, with Eight4Nine owner Willie Ryan taking on double duty as the evening's auctioneer. Ryan said giving back is something he has built into the fabric of his restaurant. "I think it's very, very important to give back to our local community," he said, noting he has been involved in community events for nearly a decade, including an annual wreath auction that has become a signature tradition. The bonnet auction came at the suggestion of community member Gene Powell, and Ryan hopes it becomes just as enduring. "Hopefully this will turn out to be one of many, many future events."

The funds go directly toward veterinary care that Animal Samaritans provides to guide dogs trained by Guide Dogs of the Desert. That care covers everything from routine checkups and bloodwork to treatment when a dog gets sick or injured.

Robert Maher, Executive Director of Guide Dogs of the Desert, emphasized how much that partnership means for the animals and the people who depend on them. "Just think about the next time you're standing on a street corner," he said. "How are you going to get across the street if you don't have your sight? When you have a guide dog next to you, you know you can safely and confidently walk across the street with ease and comfort."

Guide Dogs of the Desert is currently looking for puppy raisers and volunteers to help socialize dogs like Shelby, a puppy now in training, as they prepare to become full-fledged service animals.
