LA Metro Approves K Line Northern Extension as Villaraigosa Calls It a “Promise Kept”

The Los Angeles Metro Board has approved the long-anticipated K Line Northern Extension, marking a major step forward for one of the region’s most significant future transit projects.
The extension will expand the current K Line north from the Expo/Crenshaw Station toward Hollywood, eventually connecting with major transit lines including the B Line and D Line. The project is designed to create a critical north-south rail link, improving access between LAX, South Los Angeles, Mid-City, West Hollywood, and Hollywood.
Former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa celebrated the approval, calling it a “promise kept” to the people of Los Angeles.
“Today is a great day for Los Angeles,” Villaraigosa said, reflecting on his early efforts to fund the project through Measure R, a half-cent sales tax initiative he championed while in office. He noted the importance of investing in transit to connect underserved communities and reduce long commutes for working families.
The project, estimated to cost between $11 and $14 billion, is expected to include multiple underground stations and could take years to complete, with construction and timelines still to be finalized.
Metro is currently evaluating several route options, including alignments along Fairfax, La Brea, and San Vicente corridors.
If completed, the K Line Northern Extension is expected to transform how Angelenos move across the city, reducing traffic congestion and creating faster, more reliable transit options.
