Rancho Mirage High students take to the skies in hands-on aviation program

Students at Rancho Mirage High School are reaching new heights—literally—through a unique aviation program that’s giving them hands-on experience in the cockpit.

Through a partnership with the Palm Springs Air Museum, students in the school’s aviation pathway program recently took their first flights after completing a six-week training course designed to introduce them to careers in aviation.

Each student had the opportunity to fly alongside a certified instructor, with school district leaders also taking part in the experience. For many, it was their first time in the air—and a moment that could shape their future.

Students say the program opened their eyes to a range of aviation careers, from piloting to air traffic control. Some admitted to feeling nervous before takeoff, but once in the air, that quickly turned into confidence and excitement.

One student described the experience as unforgettable, saying it gave them a whole new perspective—not just on flying, but on the possibilities ahead.

Educators say this kind of real-world exposure is critical. By working directly with industry professionals, students can better envision themselves in aviation careers and gain experiences that simply can’t be replicated in a classroom.

The program is already set to expand, with plans to offer it to more high schools across the district next year—giving even more students the chance to explore careers in aviation.
