Trump Signature to Appear on US Dollar Bills for First Time in History
U.S. paper currency is set to feature President Donald Trump’s signature, marking a historic first for a sitting president.
The Treasury Department announced the change as part of preparations for the nation’s 250th anniversary, also known as the semiquincentennial. Officials say the move is intended to commemorate the milestone and recognize the country’s history.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said including Trump’s name on U.S. dollar bills is a way to highlight the anniversary and the administration’s role during this period.
While presidential signatures have appeared on currency before, this will be the first time a sitting president’s name is included on paper notes.
The announcement comes alongside other efforts to incorporate Trump’s name and image into commemorative materials, including proposed coins and government-related branding initiatives.
However, some of those proposals have raised legal questions. Federal law prohibits depicting a living person on standard U.S. currency, though exceptions exist for certain commemorative coins.
Lawmakers have already introduced legislation aimed at blocking any living or sitting president from appearing on U.S. currency moving forward.
The change to paper bills is expected to roll out in phases, though officials have not yet announced a specific timeline.
