FBI: Michigan Synagogue Attack Was Hezbollah-Inspired Terrorism
The FBI says a recent attack on a synagogue in West Bloomfield, Michigan was a Hezbollah-inspired act of terrorism aimed at the Jewish community.
Authorities identified the suspect as Ayman Ghazali, a naturalized U.S. citizen originally from Lebanon. Investigators say he rammed a pickup truck into the building on March 12 while more than 100 children were inside attending school.
Officials say Ghazali waited in the parking lot for more than two hours before driving into the synagogue, striking a security officer and becoming lodged inside the building. Security personnel exchanged gunfire with the suspect, who later died by suicide.
The vehicle was reportedly filled with explosives and flammable liquid, causing significant damage after a fire broke out. One security officer was injured, but no other fatalities were reported.
Federal investigators say there is no evidence of additional suspects, but allege Ghazali was influenced by Hezbollah propaganda and had been consuming related content in the days leading up to the attack.
Authorities also revealed Ghazali had prior connections in federal databases to individuals associated with the Iranian-backed group.
The FBI says the attack was deliberate and intended to cause mass casualties, highlighting ongoing concerns about extremist threats targeting religious communities in the U.S.
