Idaho Transfers Inmates to Arizona Prison as Facilities Exceed Capacity
Idaho officials are taking action to address overcrowding in state prisons by transferring inmates out of state.
The Idaho Department of Correction says 120 inmates have been moved to the Central Arizona Florence Correctional Complex as facilities across Idaho continue operating above 100% capacity.
Officials say the move is part of a broader effort to manage space limitations and maintain safe conditions for inmates and staff. An additional 200 inmates are expected to be transferred in the coming weeks.
State leaders say the Arizona facility was selected because it meets Idaho’s standards for safety, security, and access to medical and mental health care.
The department acknowledged that sending inmates out of state can be difficult for families but says the transfers are necessary in the short term while longer-term solutions are developed.
Officials are also working with county jails to relieve pressure, particularly in cases where inmates who should be housed in state facilities remain at the local level due to space issues.
Idaho corrections leaders say they are continuing to explore options to reduce overcrowding, including partnerships with other jurisdictions and expanded housing capacity.
