Live Explosive Round Found at Palm Springs Airport, Marine Detained

New details have been confirmed following a major security response at Palm Springs International Airport.
Palm Springs Police say the Transportation Security Administration discovered a live 25mm explosive round during routine screening around 12:05 p.m., prompting a coordinated emergency response.
Authorities say the device was identified as live ordnance, leading to the involvement of Palm Springs Police, the Riverside County Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team, and military officials.
The individual involved has been identified as 30-year-old Ryan Weaver of Henderson, Texas. According to investigators, Weaver told officers he found the round in a field about a year ago and believed it was not live. Due to rust and corrosion, identifying markings were no longer visible, making it difficult to determine its status at the time.
Out of caution, officials left the item undisturbed until EOD teams could assess it. Using X-ray technology, specialists confirmed it was a live explosive device—not an inert training round.
The ordnance was safely removed from the airport and transported to a remote desert area off Gene Autry Trail, south of Interstate 10, where it was detonated without incident. No injuries were reported.
Weaver was detained during the investigation and later released to military authorities. Palm Springs Police say the case will be submitted to the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office for potential charges related to possession of a destructive device. He could also face administrative action from the military and civil penalties through TSA.
Authorities emphasize the situation was handled safely, and the investigation remains ongoing.
