Live Explosive Round Found at Palm Springs Airport Safely Detonated
A potentially dangerous situation at Palm Springs International Airport was safely resolved after authorities discovered and detonated a live explosive round found during routine screening.
According to the Palm Springs Police Department, TSA agents identified the item around 12:05 p.m. during a standard security check. The object, later identified as a 25-millimeter explosive round, was heavily corroded—making it difficult to immediately determine whether it was an inert training device or an active explosive.
Out of an abundance of caution, the Riverside County Sheriff's Department bomb squad was called in. After conducting X-ray analysis, officials confirmed the round was live. It was then transported to a remote desert area near North Gene Autry Trail, where it was safely detonated.
Residents in the surrounding area were notified ahead of the controlled explosion, which occurred shortly after 3:15 p.m. Authorities confirmed by 3:30 p.m. that the area was clear. No injuries were reported, and officials emphasized there was no ongoing threat to the public.
Investigators identified the individual involved as a 30-year-old man from Henderson. He told officers he found the ordnance about a year ago and believed it was not live. He was detained during the investigation and later released to military authorities. Officials say he could face administrative action through the United States Marine Corps.
The case is now under review by the Riverside County District Attorney's Office. Authorities continue to stress that the incident appears to be isolated.
