Palm Springs Fire Station Plan Sparks Concerns Over Parking Loss
A proposed plan to rebuild a fire station in Palm Springs is drawing concern from nearby business owners.
The Palm Springs Fire Department is hosting its second open house at Fire Station One, inviting the public to tour the facility and learn why officials say a new, modern station is needed.
Fire leaders say the current building no longer meets modern safety and operational standards, prompting discussions about a replacement.
However, the proposed site for the new station, a nearby parking lot, has become a major point of contention.
Local business owners say the lot provides essential parking for more than 30 years and fears losing it could drive customers away, especially during the extreme summer heat when walking longer distances is less feasible.
Nearby hotels, including Andreas Hotel & Spa, have also raised concerns about potential noise impacts from a fire station operating close to guests.
Palm Springs Fire Chief Paul Alvarado emphasized that the current proposal is not final and that the open house is part of an ongoing effort to gather community input.
Officials say no decisions have been finalized, and discussions about the station’s location will continue as feedback from residents and business owners is considered.
The open house remains underway as the community weighs the balance between public safety needs and economic impacts.
