FBI: Michigan Temple Attack Was Hezbollah-Inspired Terrorism Targeting Jewish Community

Federal investigators say the attack at a Michigan synagogue earlier this month was a targeted act of terrorism.

During a news conference, the FBI confirmed the suspect behind the attack on Temple Israel in Bloomfield Hills was motivated by extremist ideology linked to Hezbollah and deliberately targeted the Jewish community.

Authorities revealed the suspect carried out extensive online research leading up to the attack, including searches for Jewish centers across Metro Detroit and phrases such as “largest gathering of Israelis in Michigan.”

Investigators say the suspect also researched local events before purchasing an AR-style rifle, ammunition, fireworks, and materials to construct incendiary devices.

In the hours before the attack, the suspect allegedly conducted final searches about Temple Israel, including inquiries about lunch hours, before deleting the search history.

According to the FBI, the suspect waited in the synagogue parking lot and sent disturbing messages and videos to a relative overseas. In one video, he allegedly declared his intent to carry out mass violence against those inside.

Officials say the level of planning and the nature of the materials used point to a deliberate and premeditated attack.

U.S. Attorney Jerome Gorgon says prosecutors are confident they can prove the suspect provided material support to Hezbollah.

The investigation remains ongoing, but authorities say the case highlights growing concerns about domestic threats inspired by foreign extremist groups targeting communities in the United States.
