Big Sur Gas Station Stuns Drivers with Prices Near $10 a Gallon

Drivers traveling along California’s scenic Big Sur coastline are getting a shock at the pump, with gas prices climbing close to $10 a gallon.

At a remote station in Gorda-by-the-Sea, prices have reached about $9.40 for regular, $9.70 for plus, and nearly $10 for premium fuel. For many visitors, the cost is far beyond what they’re used to seeing—even in high-priced areas like Los Angeles.

But the high prices come with unique challenges. The station operates entirely on generators, meaning it must produce its own power. On top of that, fuel is transported from more than 100 miles away, adding to the cost.

Because of the steep prices, most drivers aren’t filling up their tanks. Instead, many are purchasing just enough gas to reach a more affordable station down the road.

Despite the sticker shock, travelers say the remote location leaves them with few options—proving that in some areas, convenience comes at a premium.
