Trump Plans New Tariffs on Pharmaceutical Imports, Targeting Drugmakers Without Pricing Deals
President Donald Trump is expected to announce new tariffs targeting pharmaceutical companies that have not agreed to sell drugs directly to consumers under his “Most Favored Nation” pricing plan.
The proposed tariffs would apply to imported patented medications and their active ingredients, with rates potentially reaching as high as 100%. The policy is designed to push drugmakers to either lower prices through agreements with the federal government or shift production to the United States.
Under the plan, companies that participate in the pricing initiative could avoid the tariffs altogether. Others may be able to temporarily reduce the tariff rate to 20% if they commit to moving manufacturing to the U.S., though that rate could rise again in the future.
The move comes as part of a broader effort to reshape trade policy after a recent Supreme Court ruling limited some of the administration’s earlier tariff actions.
Supporters say the strategy could help bring down prescription drug costs and boost domestic manufacturing. Critics, however, warn that the tariffs could lead to higher prices for consumers in the short term.
Details of the plan are still being finalized, and it remains unclear which medications could be affected or exempted.
