Artemis II Astronauts Begin Historic Journey to Moon as Mission Enters Critical Phase
NASA’s Artemis II mission is officially underway, with four astronauts now traveling toward the moon in a historic return to deep space.
The mission reached a major milestone when the Orion spacecraft fired its engine to break free from Earth’s orbit, sending the crew on a trajectory that will take them farther than any humans have traveled in more than five decades.
On board are NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, and Christina Koch, along with Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen. The mission marks several historic firsts, including the first time a woman, a Black astronaut, and a non-American astronaut have traveled this far into space.
Over the next week, the crew will live and work inside the Orion capsule, conducting tests and preparing for a close flyby of the moon. The spacecraft is following a “free return trajectory,” meaning it will loop around the moon and return to Earth even without additional engine burns.
The journey will include communication tests, brief live broadcasts from space, and a record-breaking pass around the far side of the moon.
The mission will conclude with a high-speed reentry into Earth’s atmosphere, one of the most critical and challenging phases of the flight.
Artemis II is a key step in NASA’s long-term plan to return humans to the moon and eventually establish a sustained presence there.
