Indio City Manager Bryan Montgomery Announces Retirement After 33 Years in Public Service

Indio City Manager Bryan Montgomery has announced he will retire this summer after five years leading the city, and a career spanning more than three decades in local government.
Montgomery has served as City Manager since May 2021, a period that brought major changes to the city's identity and infrastructure. Under his leadership, Indio earned a spot on Fodor's Travel 2026 "Go List" and was named one of the "Top 25 Most Livable Small Cities" in the nation. Mayor Elaine Holmes credited Montgomery with driving what she called a full-scale turnaround for the city.
"His commitment to public service, strategic vision, and steady and progressive guidance have left a lasting impact on our organization and community," Holmes said. "He has led what has truly been a renaissance for Indio."
Among the projects Montgomery helped advance during his tenure are the Downtown Indio Revitalization and development of Center Stage, a new public library, a new Public Safety Campus, a new City Hall and Civic Center Campus, the Indio Sports Park set to open in May, and the Indio Lindo beautification program. The Lights at Indio Golf Course's new clubhouse is also set to open soon.
Montgomery reflected on the milestone with gratitude. "Serving the Indio community has been a highlight, and Team Indio has accomplished so much over the past five years. I am confident that the best is yet to come," he said.
After leaving office, Montgomery and his wife plan to travel before beginning service as missionaries in Latin America for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
The City Council is set to discuss next steps for the leadership transition at its April 15 meeting. Mayor Holmes expressed confidence in the road ahead, saying the city is "well-positioned to continue moving our community forward with purpose and progress."
