Trump Budget Proposal Boosts Defense Spending While Cutting Housing, Health Care, and Social Services

The White House is proposing a dramatic shift in federal spending priorities, calling for a massive increase in defense funding while cutting billions from domestic programs.

According to the proposal, defense spending would rise to roughly $1.5 trillion — a more than 40 percent increase compared to last year. The funding would support military expansion, including munitions production, naval fleet growth, and development of the proposed “Golden Dome” missile defense system. It also includes pay raises for military personnel aimed at improving recruitment and retention.

At the same time, the plan calls for a 10 percent reduction in nondefense spending, amounting to about $73 billion in cuts. Programs impacted include housing assistance, health care services, and social support systems. Among those targeted are the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program and the Community Services Block Grant, both aimed at helping low-income Americans.

Environmental and energy programs would also see significant reductions. The proposal suggests cutting the Environmental Protection Agency’s budget in half and eliminating funding for certain climate and clean energy initiatives. Additional cuts are proposed for agencies like FEMA, the IRS, and the National Institutes of Health.

The budget blueprint also includes proposals to privatize certain airport security operations and redirect funding toward specific projects, including infrastructure improvements in Washington, D.C.

While the proposal outlines the administration’s priorities, Congress ultimately controls federal spending and often makes significant changes before a budget is finalized.
