Coachella Valley Firebirds Clinch Calder Cup Playoff Spot for Fourth Straight Season

The Coachella Valley Firebirds are heading back to the Calder Cup Playoffs for the fourth consecutive season, continuing their strong presence in the American Hockey League.

The playoff berth was officially secured following a key result elsewhere in the Pacific Division, as Henderson defeated Tucson, locking the Firebirds into postseason contention. But despite clinching, the focus remains on finishing strong, with critical positioning still on the line.

Only the top three teams in the Pacific Division earn home ice advantage in the opening round, making every remaining game crucial.

The Firebirds took another important step forward with a thrilling overtime win against the Abbotsford Canucks in British Columbia. After a scoreless first period, Carson Rehkopf got the scoring started midway through the second, capitalizing on a rebound to give the Firebirds a 1-0 lead.

Abbotsford responded with two goals to take control, but the Firebirds battled back in the third period. Just over three minutes in, Jagger Firkus helped set up a play that led to a loose puck opportunity, and it was Jani Nyman’s teammate, Jagger Firkus line mate J.R. Avon, who finished the job to tie the game.

That goal secured at least one point, but the Firebirds weren’t done yet.

In overtime, defenseman Tyson Jugnauth delivered the game-winner, sealing the victory and completing a weekend sweep north of the border.

With the win, the Firebirds currently hold the number three spot in the Pacific Division standings, putting them in position for a potential home ice advantage in the first round.

The team returns home Wednesday, April 8th, where they will face the Henderson Silver Knights at Acrisure Arena.
