Experts Warn New AI Models Could Supercharge Cyberattacks in “Watershed Moment” for Security
Cybersecurity experts are sounding the alarm over the next generation of artificial intelligence, warning it could significantly increase the speed and scale of cyberattacks worldwide.
A newly revealed AI model from Anthropic, known as “Mythos,” is at the center of those concerns. According to a leaked blog post, the model has the potential to identify and exploit software vulnerabilities at an unprecedented pace, far surpassing human capabilities. Experts say this could mark a turning point in cybersecurity.
The growing use of AI “agents”—systems capable of acting autonomously—adds another layer of risk. These tools can scan networks, detect weaknesses, and launch attacks much faster than traditional methods. In some cases, a single AI system could do the work of hundreds of hackers simultaneously.
Real-world examples are already emerging. In one recent case, a hacker used AI tools to target more than 600 devices across dozens of countries. Experts say AI is lowering the barrier to entry for cybercrime, allowing individuals with limited technical skills to carry out complex attacks.
Still, specialists emphasize that AI is not purely a threat. The same technology can strengthen defenses by enabling faster detection of vulnerabilities and automated responses to attacks. However, the balance remains challenging, as attackers only need to find one weak point, while defenders must secure entire systems.
As AI continues to evolve, experts stress the importance of maintaining human oversight and preparing for a rapidly changing digital battlefield. The race between cyber attackers and defenders is accelerating, and many say the stakes have never been higher.
