NBC Palm Springs’ Steve Sumrall Celebrates 25 Years Sharing Desert History

A special milestone here at NBC Palm Springs — longtime historian, editor, and storyteller Steve Sumrall is celebrating 25 years with the station.

Sumrall, who joined the station back when it was known as KMIR, has become a familiar voice and face through his work both behind the scenes and on camera, especially as the host of “Our Desert Past.”

In a conversation with NBC Palm Springs reporter Thalia Hayden, Sumrall reflected on how his journey into television began — starting in hotel management before training on cameras and editing at Palm Springs City Hall. That path led him to a career that has now spanned a quarter century.

Over the years, Sumrall has helped uncover and share countless stories from across the Coachella Valley, bringing local history to life for viewers. From surprising facts like Evel Knievel’s early jump in Indio to mysterious desert legends, his passion for storytelling has helped preserve the region’s rich past.

Taking over hosting duties for “Our Desert Past” marked a turning point in his career, allowing him to dive deeper into the stories that define the desert and connect with the community in a meaningful way.

Colleagues say his impact goes far beyond the screen — mentoring others in the newsroom and contributing to the station’s legacy.

After 25 years, Sumrall’s dedication to local storytelling continues to resonate, highlighting the people, places, and moments that make the Coachella Valley unique.
