Cathedral City Moves Forward With Two Major Projects along Cathedral Canyon Drive

Cathedral City is moving forward with two construction projects along Cathedral Canyon Drive that will repave a key stretch of road and add a long-missing sidewalk. Work is expected to begin in May 2026 and wrap up by the end of July.

The bigger of the two projects is a full pavement overhaul of Cathedral Canyon Drive between Perez Road and the Ofelia Bringas Memorial Bridge. The road currently scores a 24 out of 100 on the city's pavement condition scale, putting it firmly in "very poor" territory and making it one of the highest-priority streets in the city's repair program. The city directed staff to move forward with the project, with a contract expected to be awarded at the April 22 City Council meeting.

The second project fills a gap that pedestrians have long had to navigate around. The west side of Cathedral Canyon Drive between Paseo Azulejo and Kieley Road has no sidewalk, leaving a roughly 1,200-foot stretch without a safe place to walk. Councilmember Rita Lamb directed that available District Improvement Funds go toward building a new 5.5-foot-wide concrete sidewalk along that segment. The city is expected to award a construction contract to S&H Civilworks of Colton on April 8, opting for their bid of $81,550, the lowest of five received. With contingency and testing costs factored in, the total project budget comes to around $92,439.

Together, the projects cover a corridor used daily by drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians throughout the city. Residents near the construction zone can expect mailers and signage ahead of any work that may affect access, and brief delays are likely during active construction.
