CBS Replaces Stephen Colbert with Byron Allen’s ‘Comics Unleashed’ in Late-Night Shakeup
BS is reshaping its late-night lineup, announcing that “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” will be replaced by a comedy-focused block beginning May 22.
The change comes one day after Colbert’s show airs its final episode on May 21, marking the end of an era for one of late-night television’s most prominent hosts, Stephen Colbert.
Taking over the 11:35 p.m. time slot will be “Comics Unleashed with Byron Allen.” Because the show runs for 30 minutes, CBS plans to air two back-to-back episodes each night.
Following that, the 12:35 a.m. slot will be filled by “Funny You Should Ask,” a syndicated game show also created by Byron Allen and hosted by Jon Kelley.
The programming shift is part of a time-buy agreement for the 2026–2027 season, meaning Allen pays the network to air the shows.
CBS previously cited financial pressures in late-night television as the reason for ending Colbert’s show, though the decision has also sparked speculation about political factors.
Allen has publicly expressed interest in the time slot and says the move is an opportunity to bring more comedy to audiences at a time when entertainment habits are shifting.
The change reflects a broader evolution in late-night television as networks adjust to new viewer trends and economic challenges.
