Priced Out of California, Artist Finds New Life and Inspiration in Rural France
A Los Angeles artist says the rising cost of living and mounting stress of city life pushed her to make a life-changing move — trading California’s coastline for the quiet countryside of southern France.
After more than two decades living and working in Venice Beach, the artist described feeling increasingly squeezed by soaring housing costs, gentrification, and the loss of creative space. She and her husband struggled to keep up with rent and feared they would never be able to afford a home in California.
That all changed after a visit to a small village in France, where the slower pace of life and natural surroundings sparked a renewed sense of purpose. Within a year, the couple made the move, purchasing a historic property and transforming it into a combined home and art studio.
The cost difference was dramatic. The couple said a similar property in Los Angeles could have cost millions, while their French home — along with renovations — was far more affordable.
Now, the artist says she’s found a level of peace and creative freedom that had become impossible in California. Instead of battling rising rents and development pressures, she spends her days painting, gardening, and embracing a quieter lifestyle.
While the move came with challenges, including adapting to a new culture and language, she describes the transition as a “rebirth” — both personally and artistically.
The story highlights a growing trend of Americans seeking more affordable and less stressful lifestyles abroad, as the cost of living in parts of California continues to climb.
