Coachella to Discuss Filling Vacant Mayor Seat After Resignation

The City of Coachella is taking the next steps to fill its vacant mayor seat and is inviting the public to weigh in.

The City Council is set to meet Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Coachella City Hall, where leaders will discuss how to move forward following the resignation of former Mayor Stephen Hernandez.

Hernandez stepped down in late March after pleading guilty in a felony conflict of interest case, which bars him from holding public office in California.

Now, the city faces a tight timeline. Officials have less than 60 days to decide whether to appoint a new mayor from within the council or call for a special election.

If the council chooses to appoint someone, that person would serve through the remainder of the current term. A special election would give voters the chance to decide who fills the role.

City leaders say community input will be an important part of the process, as they determine the best path forward for Coachella.

Residents are encouraged to attend the meeting and share their thoughts as the city works to fill the leadership vacancy.
