Dozens of Riverside County Shelter Dogs Get Second Chance Through Life-Saving Flights
In an effort to relieve overcrowded shelters, Riverside County Department of Animal Services announced a life-saving initiative to transport 58 dogs to new homes outside the region. The department is partnering with Wings of Rescue to coordinate two rescue flights—one heading to the East Coast and another to Washington state.
Officials say the county’s shelters are currently operating at more than 200% capacity, creating urgent conditions for animals in their care. The flights will primarily include medium to large dogs that have been in shelters for more than 130 days, many of whom have struggled to find adoption locally.
Due to the overcrowding, some dogs have been forced to share kennels for extended periods. In response, the county has previously waived adoption fees to encourage more residents to take pets home.
Alongside the flights, Animal Services is launching a special adoption event called “BarkChella,” running from April 10 through April 19. During this time, adoption fees will be waived at all county shelter locations, including the Coachella Valley Animal Campus.
Officials hope that both the relocation flights and the local adoption push will help ease overcrowding while giving dozens of dogs a much-needed second chance at finding permanent, loving homes.
