Trump's Iran Deadline Approaches: What’s Next?

President Trump's self-imposed deadline for Iran to reach a deal and reopen the Strait of Hormuz arrives tonight, as the president doubled down on threats to unleash widespread destruction on the country's civilian infrastructure.
At a Monday press conference, Trump warned that Iran would have "no bridges, no power plants" if negotiations failed, saying he would send the nation back to the "Stone Ages." He also posted online that "a whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again," though he added he hoped it wouldn't come to that.
Trump said Iran is negotiating, though communication has been difficult, and that their latest offer was significant but fell short. Iran has been publicly pushing for a permanent end to hostilities, rejecting calls for a temporary ceasefire.
Overnight, U.S. forces struck military targets on Kharg Island, Iran's key oil export hub, according to a U.S. official.
Democrats quickly condemned the threats, with Senator Chris Van Hollen of Maryland saying, "What the President is doing is threatening war crimes." Trump rejected that characterization, saying simply, "No, not at all. I hope I don't have to do it."
