Firebirds Autism Acceptance Night Creates Inclusive Game Experience
Tonight’s game at Acrisure Arena is about more than just hockey, it’s about inclusion.
The Coachella Valley Firebirds are hosting their second annual autism acceptance night, that is underway now, as they take on the Henderson Silver Knights.
Fans are expecting an exciting game, but with a noticeably different atmosphere. Arena officials say sound and lighting have been adjusted to create a low-sensory environment, meaning reduced music levels, softer microphone use, and a digital goal horn replacing the traditional loud air horn.
Even fan-favorite elements are being modified. Fuego's drum, typically a high-energy staple, is quieter to better accommodate guests with sensory sensitivities.
Arena leaders say the venue is a certified autism center, meaning staff are specially trained to support guests who are neurodivergent or have sensory needs.
Sensory kits are also available, including noise-canceling headphones, fidget tools, and communication credentials for nonverbal guests, helping ensure a safe and comfortable experience for everyone.
Organizers say the goal is simple: create a space where all fans can enjoy the game, feel included, and cheer on the Firebirds in a way that works best for them.
